Q: Why are you running for or seeking re-election to Whitchurch-Stouffville Town council?
A: I am running again for the same reasons I have run before, for the honour and privilege of representing the people of Whitchurch-Stouffville. I have always said that public service, especially as an elected official is the most rewarding job a person can do. And my experience with the people I serve with, the staff and residents proves that every day. We have come a long way in recent years, and this is no time to change course. With my experience and full time dedication, I aim to see the job thru.
Q: Briefly outline your platform and what you feel strongly about.
A: Regardless of the successes we have had in the last twelve years, there is more to do. the Town continues to grow, almost exponentially, and that has to be managed by a steady and experienced council. At the same time, that growth needs to be balanced with the ongoing protection of our natural features and heritage, especially in the rural areas. The ORM and Greenbelt provide both those challenges and opportunities and in we have been successful in meeting them.
While I continue to advocate for much needed increased commercial activity in the 404 corridor in Gormley and Vandorf, as well as increased housing opportunities for all new and current residents, I will continue to advocate for protection of our rural areas, especially agricultural lands.
At the same time, expanded services need to be provided in the rural areas, such as fire and emergency services, as well as road maintenance and upgrades, natural heritage protection, sufficient staff levels and increased recreational amenities and opportunities.
Q: If you are elected, what would be your top priority for the community, and why is that the most important issue to address in the coming term?
A: Priorities:
1) Preserve the way of living for the residents of ward 1. Meaning no additional residential development in the ORM/greenbelt as per provincial protections
2) Managed residential growth in the settlement areas (primarily Stouffville &Ballantrae)and “whitebelt” lands as per provincial requirements. Infill, increased densities, additional housing forms including ARUs and purpose built rentals etc especially in MTSAs to support transit
3) Appropriate commercial development as per provincial regulations in remainder of Hwy 48 lands and also remaining lands in Gromley and Vandorf (404 corridor)
4) Increased amenities/services for residents. Support new pool etc in memorial park, support new community facilities in whitebelt/MZO lands, supported bringing Simeon park into our portfolio, supported movement of Station 5-2 and 24/7 coverage as well as increased EMS coverage. Increased library services. More services/activities for seniors
5) Traffic issues. More YRP presence/enforcement, new traffic calming (lights or 4way stops where appropriate, support for roundabouts, redlight cameras, dedicated truck routes and restrictions to protect residential neighbourhoods, the return of ASE cameras to protect schools and community safety zones) Continue good relationship with Region & Province to facilitate upgrades improvements where applicable.
6) (bonus point) continued support for agricultural community, including current traditional producer sector (dairy, cash croppers and fruit/vegetable farmers), the equine community, landscape material producers and our growing agritourism sector.
